"Really, really! It's done--I, C. Dexter Haven, adopted a human today.

"Mom just filled out the paperwork, signed a check, and put it in the mailbox. She's officially mine, all mine. OK, she's mine except for the parts of her that Jane and Holly get (but they're really small, compared to how much she loves me, me, me!)"

"Whoa, cowboy. What are you saying there? Mama isn't all yours. That check paid for me, Holly, too. I got adopted in the same envelope. And mom doesn't love you more than she loves me. She just loves us differently, 'cause we're different dogs. I do what she says--well, at least most times--while you just bounce around all and refuse to come in the house when she wants you to. Who do you think she's going to love more? Maybe if you get some manners...which probably won't be in my lifetime!

"Besides, we didn't just adopt mama. We got papa too. You know how much you like him, even if mama is your main squeeze. I know, it's hard not to love the person who feeds you all the time, but let's not forget about papa. He's given you some good walks in his time."

[Sounds of a basset being severely put in his place by an older hound who is senior to him in every way.] "You young whippersnapper. Learn your place. I, Lady Jane--that's Lady Jane, ma'am, to you--was the first hound here, and both the humans have loved me longer than you've been alive. Get some respect, boy, or you won't be in MY house for long!"

[Note from the mama: Yes, it is true, we have adopted our two fosters, Dexter and Holly. Today they are officially Dashing Bassets. We welcome them to their new forever home.]
