Obviously I am not an expert by any means, but in the research I have been doing, juvenile diabetes in dogs is rather rare. When it does happen, it is usually either hereditary or caused by a viral illness like parvo.. Bassets are not known for getting heriditary diabetes. Browyn is a rescue and a parvo survivor. Regular diabetes in dogs is usually still type I and is seen most often in intact, overweight females first, and spayed, overweight females second. The most common symptom in all kinds is increased urination, increased water consumption, increased appetite, weight loss and lethargy. Browyn is a peeing machine. She drinks more than both her brothers combined. I really didn't notice an increased appetite, but she is a very good eater. She is not losing weight, but she is a 4 month old puppy and not gaining weight by leaps and bounds. I pulled all my weight records for all my puppies and at this age they were all gaining 2-2.5 pounds a week. She barely gained a pound. She is definately a woman on the go and I haven't noticed any lethargy. I actually took her in because I figured she had a bladder infection. I took in urine, but it came back fine. The vet said to bring her in and pull blood before I started limiting water (she can be rather bossy around the water bowl). Well, her blood glucose was high. So, we don't get to limit water and we will be running more tests tomorrow.
