[Dailydrool] crate versus outside

I gotta go with the majority here.  Your gal may already be crate trained.   Many rescue groups crate train their rescues.  All three of mine from various places--all came crate trained--one from Humane Society that has been a breeder's stud boy--one from animal control--he had been kept on a chain in the backyard his whole life--one--my Fancy girl had been purchased as a puppy, resold, sent to rescue, adopted out, and then dumped and adopted by me--all crate trained.

You can buy a very large 700 wired crate which would provide a Basset with ample room.  I have Newfs and Saints so my Bassets are using giant crates as that is all I ever had--the two I crate--my naughty boys Luke and Beau are very happy to be crated while I am away.  Fancy is fine and will nap on my bed while I am gone.  My boys both like to tear things up while I am gone--great when I am home but naughty and destructive while I am gone!  Both love to sleep on my bed when I am home--sigh...

Leaving a dog outside unobserved is too dangerous.  Someone could do something to her while you are gone.  Bassets hate to be alone and will do most anything to seek people or other dogs out if left alone and to their own devices including digging under a fence and escaping.
I was outside pooper scooping when I first adopted my lemon and white boy, Luke.  I have a big 1 acre fenced in yard and I called Luke and the next thing I know he had collapsed on his side.  A wasp had stung him under his eye and he over heated and went into shock.  His gums turned snow white.  He couldn't get up.  I had to carry him into the house and put him in the bathtub and hose his down with cool water.  Fortunately, I have a shower hose and head.  He came around right away after his body temperature lowered.  I thought he just had heat prostration until the big welt came up under his eye.  How I lifted a 65 pound limp dog, opened my back door, and got him into the tub I will never know!
What if I he had been alone in the backyard?  He would have died before I got home.  Always better to have a dog indoors and securely contained in a room or crate so they are safe while you are away.
