We have a Meile Cat and Dog and it's pretty good on hard surfaces as well as carpet. Meile did pretty well in a recent consumer test by Which if I remember correctly.  They are easy to find in the UK. They aren't cheap and I've had to change bags a lot recently but that might be down to our new wool carpets that seemed to be very fluffy at first. Heard mixed reviews about Dyson.
