Really, they can!

Barnaby Devil Dog OEBE, ATB was the most agile basset ever, all 70 pounds of him. His rear legs would slide out when cornering the dining room for a good chase the c at t game, however - when chasing a jack rabbit here at Daphneyland, the rabbit turned, reared up and Barnaby cornered on a dime right back to Mom's side. For years after the great scary jack rabbit incident, Barnaby would sit on the porch - watching - muscles twitching. Chase the bunny? Not him!

Recently our tech John got a motorized remote car. John's a mechanic so he pumped it up. He brought it up one day on his shift, and ran it for the hounds. Talk about hilarious. About 40 hounds took off after it in high pursuit, the bassets cornered better than the car - it kept flipping - well it flipped more when Snoopy-Tu jumped over it and turned it like a turtle on it's back as Beau chewed on the bumpers and tires. Man, you ever want to get a "herd" of bassets going, start up one of the remote control cars!!
(It must be said that Barnaby also loved remote control cars - commonly used to exercise greyhounds. We were at a dog park one day when a reporter was there for a piece on greyhound rescue. They were clocking the greyhounds an running them in pairs. Enter Barnaby who could always be counted on to outsmart anyone, he watched -2- heats intently, then on heat #3, from behind and off the sideline he ran full out, cleared the grey's and the remote pace car, ran in front of them all and POSED for the camera SMILING. The smile was seen for a moment before both Grey's and the car rolled him about 5 times as they smashed broadside into him. NBC plays that footage from time to time.)
