People interested in showing will be aware that the basset which won Best of Breed at Crufts this year was controversially excluded from going forward to Best in Show following a vet examination. The reason the owner was given was conjunctavitis.

This morning I spoke to a friend who was there both spectating and exhibiting (her bitch won Best Veteran Bitch). She saw Buzz before and after the ring event and is friendly with his owner, as her couple were both bred by the same woman. She says she saw no sign of anything wrong with Buzz's eyes and that another exhibitor, who was a vet, also looked at Buzz and said he could see no sign of infection.

In all this year, six dogs were excluded following vet exams - all of which were claimed to be eye problems. All the six dogs were from the hit list of breeds which the Kennel Club has been told to watch because of exagerrated characteristics in their breeding. All six appeared on the documentary, shown by the BBC, which made the Beeb pull out of Crufts coverage and lost them the spopnsership of Pedigree pet foods.

This sounds political to me.
