I have always crate trained my dogs and I did it with every foster that arrived, even if they had never seen a crate. The whining and crying generally only lasted a couple of sleepless nights. Then came Jordan. I had a nice new fancy crate for her. I would put her in at night and in the morning I would feel her jump on the bed and then lick my face. In checking the crate, it was still locked and the blanket covering untouched. She would stay in it all day but was getting out at night. So one night, I slept on the sofa in the family room by her crate and at 6 am, heard a noise and she popped out from behind a chair. Turns out she found a way to bend the wire on the fancy crate and wriggled out. So, I got an old crate out and put cable ties on everywhere. She did not get out again. However, she barked all night and I mean non stop from 11 PM until 6 am when I released her. I swear she didn't take a breath. She would also throw in a few howls. Fine for her, she could catch up on her sleep during the day while I was nodding off at my desk. After about 5 days of this, I threw in the towel and did not put her in the crate at bedtime. She very happily followed me upstairs and has been sleeping tucked into the small of my back ever since. She does willingly go in her crate during the day when I leave but if I am home, she carries on.. Of course, the downside is she is queen of the bed and kicks Loki off if he should dare try to sleep with us. So he sleeps downstairs where he can hear the neighborhood noises that start around 5 am at which time he comes up to the bedroom door and barks incessantly. I may crate his little behind if he doesn''t stop it soon. And Crackers just snores through it all.
