Pam,
I am with you on the weight loss. Slow is best and a pound a month is a
good losing pace, at least for the hounds we have had to put on a diet.
If one has never lost a pet to back issues caused, or added to, by obesity,
you do not know how it feels to know you possibly could have prevented it.
I had a big red and white Basset boy named Noah, about 9 yrs ago. Had him
about 3 months, he was not hugely overweight, but was on a diet to lose a
few pounds. He went down in his back and the specialists said he was not a
good candidate for surgery due to his age, weight and the injury. We had to
let him go to the Bridge. I got to love him for 3 months, but was angry
with his former owners who let him get so big. I have 4 with back end
issues now, so we are very watchful for extra poundage on the houndage!
