Pw. Lilygurl (ATB) had one of those tail cysts...exactly as you
described..first noticable and then growing over night and bursting and
draining. Our vet cleaned it out surgically and then , with great
difficulty, pulled the skin edges together over the cartilege and stitched
it together. He told me he wasn't sure if he would be able to do that and
there might have to be an amputation but he managed it. It too, was very
messy and drained for weeks, and of course, she was rather protective of it
and not too willing to have me touching or cleaning it but she and I had a
meeting of the minds on a daily basis and I think she knew that it had to
be done.

It did finally heal and for the rest of her royal life her tail had more
of a 'bend' than usual, but Lily's tail was very furry and you could not
tell where the cyst and surgery was except for the bend. Lily never fussed
with it after it was healed and she never got another one on her tail. Good
luck and keep us posted.
