Becky, has your vet prescribed antibiotics for the bacterial infection?  Mine prescribes Temaril-P for itching/hot spot type issues.  It is a combination if antihistamine and a small dose of prednisone : to address the itching and calm the existing inflammation to help break the cycle.

Itchy hot spots are no fun!
