Young Charlie, a red-and-white basset, has five inches of white at the tip of his tail. 

Our Elsinore, a black-and-tan basset, arrived ten years ago next month with no white at all in her tail. Over the years, however, she’s started growing three white hairs, then ten, then twenty, and now at the age of maybe 12 or 13, she has about an inch-long tip of mostly white hairs. In the overall spirit of aging, she’s now getting white hairs further down her tail. It’s been fun watching this slow color change she’s been doing over the years.
