I can sympathize here. have both too but I'm 80 -  I don't think anything 
much can keep a stubborn basset down.   A vet in Victoria (still picture her 
a tiny person carrying this 40lb Basset to back) says they are built like 
MAC trucks. Apparently that nose can detect roast beef in a sealed vault.
All he cares about is being with you and will adjust due to pure 
stubborness.   I am sure others will have advice cuz a lot of knowledgeables 
here.
