For those who are curious . here is the "Essential Basset Glossary; or, A
New Drooler's Guide to Deciphering Your Daily Drool Discourse" (sorry, long)

 

4 paws up ---- a 4-star rating, a phrase coined by Queen Ethel to refer to
an event, such as a waddle, that agreed with her. 

 

ahrooo --- noise made by an excited and happy basset, often at the sight of:
people walking by, other dogs, passing cars, cats, birds, squirrels, bugs,
dust, air. Also spelled Arroo or Awroo.  

 

arrooo --- see Ahrooo 

 

ATB acronym for "at the Bridge," referring to the Rainbow Bridge, the place
where hounds and all pets go to await their beloved humans after they depart
this earth 

 

awrooo --- see Ahrooo 

 

BABES ---- acronym for "Basset Angels Being Extraordinarily Sophisticated,"
led by Queen Bess. An exclusive basset society.  

 

bagel --- beagle basset mix 

 

Basset 500 --- wild basset equivalent of running laps, that frenzied flurry
of furry activity during which bassets propel themselves with wild abandon
(usually in circles) before collapsing, utterly exhausted from their heroic
circulatory exploits around the room 

 

Basset Buffet --- feast that greets new bassets arriving at Rainbow Bridge,
now presided over by FQ FeyFey and Melba Toast 

 

basset crap --- collectible basset memorabilia, including but not limited to
basset lamps, cookie jars, switch plates, car mats, and so on 

 

bassetude --- a phrase coined by Michigan Basset Rescue's Queen Ethel, who
signed her posts "Yours in Bassetude," referring to that classic basset
attitude we all know so well. Ethel has sadly gone to the Bridge but is
still remembered fondly as the 2003 Queen of MBR's Waddle. 

 

bellyrub --- nuff said!  

 

Boardwaddle --- the annual fund-raiser in Ocean City, New Jersey, made
famous by the grand dame of Waddles, Forever Queen FeyFey 

 

BUV --- short for Basset Utility Vehicle, important for transporting hounds
to waddles, play dates, and treat stores. 

 

Caruso (1995-2002) --- Nancy Gallagher's first basset as well as the
inspiration and guardian angel for the Daily Drool 

 

Combat Camp --- cyber event from the 2003-2004 Daily Drool era 

 

crossed paws --- canine equivalent of crossed fingers; sending good thoughts
and prayers to those in need 

 

counter cruising --- basset habit of checking out what delightful tiding
might be awaiting atop counters (usually kitchen counters)  

 

Doo Dah Parade --- There are TWO (at least) Doo Dah Parades, one in Old
Pasadena, California, the Sunday before Thanksgiving (Basset Hound Rescue of
Southern California's HOWLelujah Chorus waddles in this parade) and one in
Ocean City, New Jersey, in April (Tristate Basset Rescue waddles in this
one, the only day when dogs are permitted on the city's boardwalk). Without
question, the bassets are the STARS of BOTH!  

 

drool --- slimey doggie saliva shared freely by bassets, may be slung over
great distances by practiced pups; also Drool, nickname for Daily Drool site


 

DroolMBL --- cyber event recounting the exploits of a merry band of bassets
and folk who traveled the country in 2004 from one rescue event and
Drooler's home to another 

 

FeyFey --- see FQ FeyFey 

 

flat basset --- a.k.a. "squish basset"; bassets in a flattened state-on
belly, with back legs stretched out behind them and ears spread 

 

food-slave --- human whose sole responsibility in life is to provide an
ample, varied, and delicious diet to the bassets they serve 

 

foster failure --- person who fails miserably at providing a temporary
residence for a relinquished or abandoned basset but succeeds wonderfully in
giving said basset a loving forever home 

 

FQ FeyFey --- short for "Forever Queen FeyFey, (ATB)" renowned basset who
was Queen of the Michigan Waddle in 1998 (with Caruso as King) 

 

furbaby --- also furbabies those lovable, soft, cuddly hounds we all love so
much 

 

gotcha day --- day when a rescued pup finds his/her forever home, often
celebrated with food, treats, food, toys, food, playtime, food, extra
bellyrubs, food 

 

he-slave --- male human servant to a basset hound (frequently misidentified
as the male "owner" of a basset hound)  

 

Melba Toast --- FeyFey's confidante who reported on new arrivals at the
Bridge until her own sad trip in 2005 

 

Moosespeak --- style of speech adopted by da Moose (ATB 2005), renowned
rescue basset from BROOD, famous artist (see www.dopeydopeydopey.com for his
creations) and two-time loser in pollyticks during the Dopeycrat Campaigns
of 2000 and 2004 

 

OEBE --- acronym for "Order of the Evil Basset Empire," originally led by
Noah Go Slowah (ATB 2004) and now under the direction of Roland, Duke of
Ears. 

 

pawction --- fund-raising auction of basset crap  

 

PITs --- acronym for "pwince or pwincess in training"  

 

poopcicle --- to some pups, a yummy wintertime delicacy 

 

pw --- short for Pwincess or Pwince, a title originally bestowed by FQ
FeyFey on deserving hounds and now administered by Pw Brandy; refers to a
hound's slave training achievements  

 

Rainbow Bridge --- Based on Native American legend, the place that hounds
(and other animals) go to await their much loved humans after they leave
this earth.  

 

Ramble --- identical to a Waddle, fund-raising stroll by and with bassets
for rescue efforts by Basset Rescue of Old Dominion (BROOD)  

 

she-slave --- female servant to a basset (frequently misidentified as the
female "owner" of a basset hound); as every basset slave knows, the power
lies irrevocably with the hound 

 

sling drool --- to wish good luck, often directed at ailing hounds or humans


 

slurps --- popular basset sign-off (often used by Queen Ethel) 

 

snood --- protective covering for delicate basset ears 

 

snooter kisses --- those loving, slurpy basset kisses we know so well 

 

squid --- RozeyMae first referenced this wild, tentacled creature that
she-slaves often wrestle with and houndies love to chew; sometimes called a
"bra" by humans, as in "where's my bra . I know it was here a moment ago?" 

 

Talk to the paw ---- phrase of obvious meaning, usually directed to a
useless food-slave (popularized by Queen Ethel) 

 

TBO --- "The Bearded One" a.k.a. Bill James (1944-2001), see
http://www.allan-der.com/tbo/index.html for details on this extraordinary
friend of bassets and the Daily Drool and read some of his legendary tales  

 

Waddle --- a fund-raising walk sponsored by a local basset rescue (see also
Ramble)  

 

Woofles --- favorite sign-off of FeyFey, who ended her postings with
"Woofles, FeyFey"  

 

WWFFD --- acronym for "What Would FeyFey Do?"  

 

* This dictionary dedicated to da Moose, who may have possessed a limited
vocabulary ("moose think. big think.") but certainly had a huge heart (as
well as extraordinarily long ears and a penchant for puppies). He's greatly
missed (big miss. big sad. big love.)
