Firstly, heart-healing drool to everyone who has lost their dog recently. There have been far too many.
On the subject of names, there is (of course) a long story to both my dogs' names, so I'll post them separately.
When we met Rolph at the all-breed rescue, his name was Bertie. Most bassets in the UK are called Fred, for the cartoon basset, or Bertie, after Bertie Bassett, a sweet-maker's logo.
He was two and had been at the rescue more than six months (I suspect he had also been adopted out and returned a few times). We decided to change his name. Younger daughter, whose dog he was supposed to be, wanted to call him Artemis, after the book character Artemis Fowl (a boy genius criminal mastermind, how apt). Older daughter had wanted to call any future daughter Artemis, so objected. She thought he should be Rolph. In the end, because we had been told he had a pedigree and the girls felt he might be missing out, he was named Rolphemis Fitzspaniel of Avondale. He is still called Rolphemis if, or rather when, he misbehaves.
