The old dog is a friend of mine,
has been for all these years.
He’s listened to both joy and grief
with understanding ears.

We’ve shared a lot of secrets,
this greying hound and I-
Respected each our separate thoughts
as time has marched us by.

He speaks not much but knows that I
interpret all his needs
And knows that when a task’s done well,
I’ll pet him for his deeds.

In summertime he’ll play and run,
reluctant to tire,
In wintertime, he’ll feel his age
and snooze before the fire.

With slowing walk and fading coat,
his eyes becoming dim,
I realize the time must come
when I’ll be missing him.

Let me not be sad, but thankful
for his love instead-
And bend to fluff his pillow
and stroke his sleeping head.

I am doing a houseclean in our storage room and came across a book about obedience and tracking for Bassets, circa 1980. This poem was in it.
Lovely thoughts.
