Our first basset, Jane, had some sleigh bells that I'd put on the door 
for her to ring when she wanted to go out. After a while she learned 
that if she rang them, I'd get up out of my chair, so she did just what 
Mariah did to get my warm spot.

An animal behaviorist told me dogs didn't think like that, but he could 
not explain it.

Anyone who's had a smart basset knows they certainly do think like that!
