Dearest Rob and Fendi
Cysts are the bain of all bassets and their owners. Pretty much every hound we've had has had at least one.
One of my hounds that have since went to the Bridge had one on her back. I tried and tried to clean it as best I could, hoping it would go away. It didn't, and got worse and worse, till one day I saw some green ooze coming out if it, and it had gone gangrenous, which rhymes with dangerous, and had him remove it at once, and thankfully, it never returned. But did involve surgery.  One of my current crew had one on her back, and as soon as it erupted, I ran her right into the vet. The vet said "let me shave it, so to have a closer look", and thought  hmmm, well ok, gotta know what your dealing with", and they took her into another room, their work area. And I mean to tall ya, lots of screaming, howling and crying was coming from the other room, and I was getting very nervous at this point, and was getting ready to storm back there, when they brought her out. They shaved the area alright, but also, for lack of a better word, scraped out the cyst, and there was crater in the middle of a shaved area about the size of a nickle. I asked what the heck? Did you do some sort of surgery? Without pain killer no less? He said no, just cleaned it. Within about an hour the hole shrank down to the size of a pea, and I felt better. And the best part, it never did come back.
So this is two of my experiences, hope I've been some help. Every case is different, good luck and keep us posted, Vikki
