Some of you may have seen this on Facebook.
At the moment I have my sister and brother-in-law from Greece staying with me. They are not used to having dogs in the house. My sister loves mince pies, a traditional English festive treat made up of raisens, sultanas, currents, spices and a thick fruit sauce, in a butter pastry.
She bought a pack of six and left them in the kitchen. At 5.45pm I remembered I had run out of dog food, so we jumped in the car and nipped up to the local shop. We were gone 20 minutes. On our return I was greeted by two happy dogs and a ripped-up completely empty packet of pies.
Clara, who is closer to 15 than 14, has been in kidney failure for a year and I knew it was her who stole the pies, but I couldn't be sure Rolph hadn't helped eat them. I called the vet immediately and ended up having to take them to the emergency vet a couple of towns away.
It turned out Clara had eaten the whole lot. Rolph, however, had to have his stomach emptied for them to be sure. When they brought him out to me to take home, I was really fearful the shock of it all was going to kill him. He was collapsed and completely unresponsive. Clara had to stay in and be medicated, flushed out with fluids and have her kidney values check 24 hours later.
He has since completely recovered.
Long story short, Clara has slightly worsened her kidney problems, but she is home and sleeping soundly  . . . . and no doubt dreaming of mince pies.
Sally, with Rolph and Clara, UK - thankfully
