Having done double duty as a Basset owner and a Vet Tech I can assure you
that Dale is correct about x-rays of Bassets and the way they are read. You
need to find a Vet who is familiar with the completely awkward skeletal
formations of the average Basset for more than one reason. It is common for
a Vet to tell you that your puppy has luxating patellas (roaming kneecaps)
and needs them surgically repaired. DO NOT DO THIS unless the puppy is
screaming in pain and has been checked out by an orthopedic surgeon and you
have spoken with your breeder, another Vet and other Basset owners. I had
one of mine on the operating table and sedated when the surgeon looked at
the xrays and then the puppy and said ARE YOU CRAZY?? and there was nothing
wrong with her knees at all, she was just a Basset.

Basset rads always look as if the dog was put together with Tinker Toys by
a child in a hurry.

According to his xrays, Llewis was hopeless and probably would never walk
but he did, and he ran and he galloped and he loved life. The same
Orthopedic surgeon who said his Mother did not need her knees repaired also
said Llewis would be able to get around just fine if we took him home and
let him play with the others, so we did, and it worked.
So be very very cautious when someone reads your Basset's xrays. Get a
second or even third opinion. When hiring a Vet your first question should
be "How many Basset hounds are in your practice?"

MomPerson, the Voice of Experience in this case.
