Dale is correct but if you want a medication that you have to pay for get
some Pyoben cream or an acne medication with pyoben in it. It dries and
cleanses. The problem is that drool and debris get into the folds which
never dry and are a breeding ground for nasty bacteria. I once had one of
mine anesthetized and ready to have dental when the surgeon discovered his
flews were horribly infected. End of surgery altho I believe we cleaned his
mouth and face off while he was still under-- just easier. (I worked there
so I could do it myself and monitor his waking up at the same time.)
While I am in that general vicinity, if your Basset develops a red, raw,
itchy spot on his neck, remove any collars and take off his tags. The drool
keeps the spot wet and something in the metal buckles and/or rings that
hold tags causes the spot to become infected. Clean it with vinegar and
water or pyoben gel. Find a different collar or keep a collar off at home.
(Ours never wore collars at home because I was always afraid they'd get
caught in it while playing and choke one of them. It happens. All my dogs
are chipped and registered with the company.)

MomPerson who wishes someone wouldn't howl when the phone rings. Someday I
will miss it but not while I am trying to talk above the noise.
