Here is some info I got from my vet about what she is seeing. My not a
basset (Maggie) ended up at the ER vet 2 weeks ago with vomiting and
some bloody diarrhea. White count was low and liver enzymes were up. No
fever, 3 days and $$$ later she was home. The ER vets never could find a
cause. I took her to my vet for her follow up check up and more blood
work. My vet said that in the last 6-8 weeks she has seen about 24 dogs
with the same symptoms. What hit home with her was the blood work for
all showed lower white counts and elevated liver enzymes. She thinks it
may be some new virus going around since she has never had anything like
this before. Also, young dogs bounced back fast older dogs took longer
for the diarrhea to go away. Maggie is fine now and her blood work is
still improving, but not quite normal yet. Hope this info may help some
of you and if you have had similar experiences lately. Paisley, my
basset diva has been just fine.

I, like Sue Autry, also only got one date for the calendar, with no option
anywhere to add another date as I was going through the online form. Are we
doing something incorrectly?

Thanks,
Menzie

?Hello from Southern Indiana and all of the crew at Howling Hound Acres. No we have not fallen off the earth. It has just been a very busy summer caring for the cattle, chickens, hounds and kitties. Plus all of the farm and garden work. I have also been helping out a little at a friends farm and of course caring for my parents. I oversee both of their medical care and medications, plus other things to help my dad care for my mother who is now moderate level dementia. The dogs have been taking it all in stride. Xander is not happy when I have to be away from our farm. And he hasn?t been happy with the lack of walks due to me having to take a parent to an appointment, high heat & humidity, or me working the garden or canning vegetables. Seth and Xander are my clean up crew when I am freezing or canning, snatching up anything that falls onto the floor. Maggie Moo stays out of the kitchen for the most part as she has learned that anything the boys snatch the momma will also bring one to
her while she rest comfortably on the couch. Seth and Xander especially like tomatoes and sweet peppers, which if given 1/2 a chance they will steal one. However, they do stay out of the kitchen when I am canning hot peppers. Which I assume to them and their sensitive noses I might as well be making bear spray. All of the hounds are doing well. Xander will be 9 in December?how did that happen. However he has not really slowed down very much as he loves going for his walks and will out pace the 2 much younger hounds. He will also frequently play with Seth and or Maggie. Sometimes even initiating play. Seth is 5 years old and still has a naughty streak a mile long. Maggie Moo is 3, she is very sweet, is very smart and she is very well behaved. All 3 are living the good life with lots of love, attention and good eats. If you want to see pictures of them and the other critters on the farm check out our FaceBook farm page @ Howling Hound Acres.
Virtual Hugs to all of the humans and Belly Rubs to all of the hounds.
Michele Swartz, Momma to Xander, Seth and Ms. Maggie Moo

It?s Chomper !!!
Mom thinks it was a virus too. ?Both Samantha and I had our nails trimmed the day before. She suspects the vet knows this and ThATS why she didn?t recommend just dropping Sam off. ?She knows momPerson has the pharmacy back there
Samantha Jane??had a (mostly) normal BM this morning and we were all overjoyed.?
Hopefully everyone else recovers fully and quickly as well
Goodbye from Chomper who only got loose stools for one day and no puking at all.?

We too have suffered with the vet unavailability. A couple of months ago
when Horton went through an eating crisis, our vet suggested we take him to
the ER. There is a new ER not far from us, so we trotted off there. We
waited all afternoon before they finally took him in and ran tests.Since
Horton is not a happy camper at  a vet's office, it was not a
pleasant experience.

I recognize that he was not visibly seriously ill, and they had one dog who
had been hit by a car, who took up a lot of time, but I have never had to
wait so long at an ER vet, and there were a number of vets there, so I do
not quite get why it took so long. Some of the animals that jumped ahead of
us did not seem all that critical either.

I hope that the vet situation improves as Covid gets under control. I know
a lot more people adopted animals, which makes a difference. But I am still
stymied at this slowdown.

In October I have an appointment  for Horton with an internist. It was the
best date I could get a month or more ago. They said they would call me if
they had a cancellation, but I haven't heard anything. I'm sure no one
wants to cancel an appointment under these circumstances. And they probably
have a long line of people who want to take cancellation spots too.

Thankfully, Horton has been doing well. Twice in the past year I have been
told he has cancer, and I am not believing either diagnosis, based on what
I have heard from other vets and the way he is currently acting. My
favorite vet, whom we had gone to since 1997, is nearly retired and only
comes in once a week. She is a wonderful diagnostician (and told me when I
last saw her that the first diagnosis of cancer was wrong). If I could
still stay with her, I would, but after what looks like two strikes out by
other vets in the practice, I would like to change vets. But I don't know
that this is the time to do it.  I will talk that over with the internist
when I see him.

I don't know which is worse, trying to get to see a human doctor or a vet.
Both are pretty miserable.

Yes!
Mine also.
First one-- remember I thought Doc ate something the neighbor kids threw
over the fence--(I am not paranoid when it comes to the dogs)
But no, I betcha you guys are right and it was a virus. Interesting because
my dogs go NOWHERE, but the dogs in back and next door go all over the
place. (The one next door is/was let out in the front in the morning
without much supervision and no leash and often wandered into our yard to
"go all over the place" but has not done so lately, not since Mr Biskit
carefully placed the dog poop in the middle of the sidewalk for everyone to
see and have to walk around)
BTW we are not sure how she will react and it may be with unmitigated
terror, but Mr Biskit is thinking about the Waddle this year. So if you see
a stange white-haired gent and a horror-struck fluffy little girl Basset,
ask if he is Mr Biskit.
I cannot attend, I have another commitment.
