I'm suprized no one has mentioned diatomaceous earth for killing insects. It is not really "dirt", but the remains of tiny aquatic animals ground into a fine powder. It gets between the parts of an insect's exoskeleton and dries them up from the inside out. It's good for fleas, ants, etc., and perfectly safe. As a matter of fact, "food-quality" diatomaceous earth is sometime mixed with farm animal feed to cut down on critters in the feed.
