McCann, the 14-year-old Basset who slept his way from Lansing, Michigan to
Toronto, Ontario last February.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class=MsoNormal><span lang=EN-US><o:p> </o:p></span></p>
<p class=MsoNormal><span lang=EN-US>I’ve had him for a wee bit over six
months now and it feels as though he’s been mine forever. All his
fur has grown back (he had been missing the fur over, oh, I’d say 70% of
his body, including his ears) although the vet was not at all hopeful that it
would. His hind legs are the slightest bit rickety, but he still manages
to walk for miles and miles through all kinds of weather. <o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class=MsoNormal><span lang=EN-US><o:p> </o:p></span></p>
<p class=MsoNormal><span lang=EN-US>The crazy barking has stopped with not one
complaint from the other tenants—I think his obvious separation anxiety
was alleviated by having two other dogs around. I’ve managed his
incessant drinking and peeing (numerous tests have ruled out anything
horrible. He’s actually in astonishingly good shape, touch wood) by
giving him water only at set times throughout the day—he’s
well-housebroken now. <o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class=MsoNormal><span lang=EN-US><o:p> </o:p></span></p>
<p class=MsoNormal><span lang=EN-US>You forget just how neglected he had been
and I’m grateful for the memory loss, to tell you the truth. From
being a dog who had been left outside 24/7 for seven years (in Michigan
weather!) he must think he’s in clover. I only regret that he’s
not overly affectionate, although he insists on his morning cuddle. <o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class=MsoNormal><span lang=EN-US><o:p> </o:p></span></p>
<p class=MsoNormal><span lang=EN-US>Really, he’s an absolute darling and
I still am astonished at what could possibly have possessed his former owner to
have treated him so cruelly. He is loved beyond measure (although I
oughtta be whupped when it comes to dereliction of ear-cleaning duties.
Sigh)—finally and forever.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
