We moved to Georgia in 2003, and I stumbled on your column today in the Bradenton Herald online. <br> <br> I wanted to let you know that Meg passed away last May, six weeks shy of her third birthday. She died of heatstroke because of her fear of thunder. We knew her fear was escalating, and I had been on the phone with the vet that day to put her on a daily anxiety medication because the storms were so bad up here, and she was getting worse with each one. <br> <br> We put Meg in her kennel as we always did when we left one night, and we came home four hours later to find her barely breathing. She and our entire living room were covered in blood from her attempt to flee the thunderstorm. We rushed her to the animal emergency hospital that night where they told us she had a second degree heat stroke from getting herself into such a frenzy to get out of the kennel. <br> <br> We received the phone call at 3 a.m. that she had passed. One by one, all of her internal organs had simply shut down. Meg was a beautiful girl, extremely healthy, full of life, an expert Frisbee dog, and thanks to you, an obedient and well-behaved dog. Her sudden death was so senseless and hard to understand. <br> <br> I just wanted to let you know so that you can make others aware that this sort of thing can happen, and so that no other family has to suffer this tragedy. Thanks so much for all you did for Meg. </i> <br> <br> <b>DEAR PET OWNER:</b> Thunder phobia can be devastating for a dog and its family. It is a topic to be discussed with your veterinarian, especially if you need to consider medications. Every year, the Chateau takes on additional pets in daycare during the rainy season so they can have the comfort and sense of security we provide during the storms. <br> <br> The condition that precipitated Meg's demise is rarely discussed or considered a threat to our pets' health. The emergency hospital veterinarian diagnosed the problem as "second degree heat stroke." She had raised her own body temperature through her excitement and nervous reaction to the stress brought on by the storm, not from any of the normal causes of heat stroke we would expect in May and the summer months. <br> <br> As we observe our pets and the ways in which their bodies deal with stress, we may need to seek professional assistance in learning how to help our best friends cope with tense situations. A good first step is to report situations and symptoms to your veterinarian. <br> <br> The clinical signs of heat prostration are the same, regardless whether it is first or second degree. You know something is very wrong when you observe heavy breathing and/or panting, the appearance of discomfort, usually with the animal lying down, and skin that is warm to the touch. Taking the body temperature will confirm the heat distress if the temperature is at, or above, 104 degrees. <br> <br> First aid procedures are merely an initial response. We want to lower the animal's body temperature gradually. If we lower it too rapidly, the pet could go into shock, which is every bit as dangerous as the heat stroke. The immediate goal is to lower the temperature to about 104 within the first 10-15 minutes. Once it is there, rush the animal to a veterinarian. Consequences of heat stoke could result in kidney failure, blood clotting problems, neurological reactions like seizures and swelling of the brain. So, you really need to have the doctor check your pet out as soon as is practical. <br> <br> When striving to lower the temperature in those critical first few minutes, you can use a hose to run water on the animal's body, or you can place water-soaked towels on the head and body. Turn on a fan and point it in the pet's direction. Sometimes rubbing alcohol under the front and back legs or on the paw pads can help. Just be careful not to use more than about a half-pint, because too much can be toxic. I caution people to avoid making the water or the towels too cold; that means ice is definitely disallowed, as the resulting state of shock presents a whole new set of problems. <br> <br> Very often the removal of a stimulus will be sufficient to allow our best friends to de-stress.
