<DIV>Awwwww. How can one describe the wonder and the absolute pleasure of
a perfect day ? Obviously I will take this challenge and attempt to do
justice to the wrap up of 2008's BHCSC Picnic.</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV>The Basset Hound picnic is thrown by our local Breed Club as an awareness
day and to assist in promotion of basset rescue. We are very fortunate as
to the best of my knowledge, this is the only event of its kind in the country -
thrown by a breed club to assist rescue. This year was the 53 rd annual
picnic.</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV>Rescue groups present were BaRNI at Daphneyland, Golden Empire Basset
Rescue, Basset Hound Rescue of Southern California and Basset Rescue
Connection. Each with a booth and items to be purchased to assist in the
individual groups rescue efforts - there was great stuff to be had! BaRNI
is very fortunate to be able to hold the raffle - and so many people donated,
assisted and bought tickets to help the hounds of BaRNI - we thank you
all.</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV>One of the highlights of the day - (and there are many) for me, was
the Rescue Parade.</DIV>
<DIV>I take great advantage of the opportunity of seeing all of our alumni and
the hounds that would otherwise be euthanized if rescue and shelters did not
intervene... and oh what a wonderful ring full of glorious happy
fur-babies we had! It is completely selfish of me I know, but I always sit
behind the ring announcer and get to kiss, gaze or pet on each baby as they
strut thru the ring. As I sit there and the hounds of rescue show off
their forever families - my mind is constantly filled with the knowledge of what
that hound went thru to find a new forever family - some fortunate to have
limited homeless time - others so very near death that it truly takes a
team of rescue, vets and specialists to save their lives - each and every hound
so well loved. Hounds who were aged and found the family fit to spend
their days with - Lucy, Mitzi, Chuck, Tanner, Henry, Cleo, Maggie... Hounds that
visit often and had such horrible back stories - Raxy and the Firecracker Pups,
The Christmas Puppies, Crash, Maggie, Hunter, Dewey - hounds that no one thought
would ever leave the ranch - George, Amos, Snoopy, hounds in foster
homes... Maizy, Sadie Mae, Thumper, Moby recovering from surgery and unable
to attend - but sent his human slave anyway..... The Picnic is a rejoicing of
happy hounds in loving homes. And I cry tears of gladness all day
long. Thank you for allowing me the joy of seeing our babies - and getting
slimed.</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV>Surprise visitors - Aunti Denise Schwartz of the San Diego Basset Hound
Club brought her wonderful cards and set right up next to us to benefit
Barni hounds - Dawn of the East (NJ - Tri State BHR) and Walli from
NY were a huge surprise!! And in true "good Aunti Fashion" DoE bought
raffle tickets, club pins and various items - and hawked the lovely basset
necklaces we hear so much about on the Daily Drool - I know I now own
one!! It was wonderful to see the Aunt's and the hounds appreciated
drooling on East Coasters. I am not sure however that the East Coast
hounds will appreciate drool returning home from Western Hound Slingers - there
may be some foodslaves in a bit of trouble. I think truly tho, the visitor
who came the furthest distance was Amos' G'ma - straight in from Mexico
City! I still have to giggle at what she must have thought seeing so many
people all swarming over Amos!! She does rescue in Mexico, and my hat is
off to her efforts which mean so much to the critters lucky enough to be helped
by her!</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV>Getting to see our extended families - Romi, Rocco, Lana and the newest
Fred - DaisyDuc, Little Duc, Maggie Su, Pretty Boy Floyd, China Moon,
Snowy..... the glorious hounds of the club one and all - who cannot resist
a cuddle and a slurp from pure beauty anyway? Admiring those hounds we get
to see the best of the best.</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV>Costumes are wonderful and of course Liz and I, former rivals, now buddies
stand and admire so much talent and love put into each and every costume - the
reigning queen Lucy and her ever extending family taking the show this year (for
the third time in a row!) The Howlers, the ears - the paws - the agility hounds,
conformation - amazing. No matter what or where your interests lie - there
is something for everybody at the picnic.</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV>Volunteering to assist with the day and all that leads up to it takes a
swarm of muscle and hard work - and so many helping hands make it
possible. BaRNI's booth is a compilation of a years hard work and effort
from literally over a hundred people, and BHCSC puts an enormous amount of
effort into making sure all is as it should be - planning, vendors, food, set
up, registration, mercantile, ring announcing, judging, tear down, clean
up, promotional - the task is huge and so well done! The Club
volunteers make it look effortless - I know from personal experience it is
not. A giant and huge Thank You to the Basset Hound Club of Southern
California for holding such a great event year after year.</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV>There is always so much to tell - I find myself rambling - so the biggest
question I have post-picnic is this:</DIV>
