Most of my friends wouldn't even consider leaving their dogs at a kennel. I, however, would much rather kennel my dog than use a petsitter in my home. Fortunately for my dog, I don't go away often. I will be housing my first ever basset at a kennel in a new area for the first time in about a month. I learned a long time ago that it is extremely important to look carefully at kennels before using one and planning ahead. The first kennel I looked at where I now live was not at all desirable. It smelled, the dogs' outdoor access was limited, it was in a flood-prone area and part of the building was wood. The next one I looked at was clean looking and smelling and only about $2/day more. I feel comfortable leaving my dog there.
