I wanted to pass along some information in case
other rescue groups are interested in getting set up to accept credit
cards. Last year CBHR signed up to accept credit cards through PayPal, and it
has really worked out well for us. We pay a flat fee of $30 per month, and do
not have any minimums to meet. The payments we accept through our website go
directly into our PayPal account and are charged the standard PayPal transaction
fee for receiving money (around 2%, I think). If you get your PayPal account
approved as a non-profit, your transaction fees are even less.

Users paying by credit card just enter their card
information the same as they would on any other site (ie, the PayPal part is
transparent). You can also manually enter
credit card charges through your PayPal account using their Virtual
Terminal service (a new tab on regular paypal account). When we go to events or
take credit cards by phone, we just write down the card type, number and
expiration date and enter it in through our PayPal account. Our store sales went
up significantly once we started accepting cards online and at events. I had
looked into accepting cards through various banks, and it was much more
expensive. Hope this is helpful!
