Bone jour! It's Miss Penny & Miss Polly woofin' in from across the
waves in France.

We do hope all our Aussie friends are safe and well, as well as their
families. What we are seeing on the news over here is horrific. We are
sending lots of "fires out" drool.

Lurps to all,

Hi everyone,

Today is Jeff and Trudy's calendar day.Tomorrow is Trudy's 3rd birthday and
Friday(the 13th) is Jeff's 3rd birthday and its a full moon week.

I suppose I will have to stop singing Jeff's theme song (If I only had a
brain from the wizard of oz).We have a doggy door on our sliding door and
because of the way we had to put it in we have to put a stick in the track
so that it doesn't open. When the stick isn't there Jeff can get the door
open, anyway last night he took the stick out and let himself and the other
dogs out as well, luckily it does open to the pen.I had the door closed on
the dog door cause they were running in and out barking at nothing.

My DH and I are hooked on the phrase Caught in the riptide of lub. It has
become so much fun to say only we add pauses,it goes Caught(pause) in the
riptide of lub.Of course every time we do it I think of Bev and her DD from
a few weeks ago about intelligent people turn into weird people when they
close the doors to the world and become basset slaves.

Anyway,I am rambling.

Snooters and prayers to all,

Marty,Mom to Jeffery,Trudy,Mason and Hazel and the 5 c@ts

> Bill Here, press agent/personal trainer to Miss Angela Basset, Droop and Drool Diva of Wichita and Sedgwick County

I received this note from a friend who has recently gotten very interested in rescues. Winfield Kansas is about 45 miles southeast of Wichita on Hwy 77.
I mentioned bringing the two into our home but Miss Angela is strongly against it. She is exasperated most of the time from trying to domesticate the standard poodle next door and she prizes her quiet sleeping time on her couch.

> Hey Bill -- There are two purebred basset puppies in Winfield, KS at the
> Cowley County Humane Society. I thought you might pass the info on to
> your contact that works with Basset Rescue.

I'm a new subscriber, so allow me to introduce myself. (I'll try to
incorporate the lingo.) I'm a food-slave to two boys, Baxter (11 months) and
Boomer (8 months). Boomer was my first, a rescue from a bad living
situation. He's much happier and healthier since joining my family four
months ago. He told me he wanted a playmate, and wouldn't you know
it--Baxter needed a home, too. A family found him wandering in a
neighborhood, but they could not locate his owners, so they found me, and
he's been with us for 2 months. All's well, and the boys get along great.

Now to the problem at hand. Recently, Boomer has taken to ignoring his
food--hardly basset-like behavior. They eat in the kitchen from their own
stainless-steel bowls. Baxter eats like a champ, but Boomer lays there and
grunts. He will eat if I pour the food on the floor or on a paper plate, but
even then he only begins once Baxter is finished. Baxter becomes annoyed
with Boomer's slowness and often tries to sneak bites from his plate.

So 1) What caused this change? and 2) Is it permanent?

Drool all around!

Kate, Baxter and Boomer

Sorry double post but this reminds me of when I was in Bowness there was a fast food restaurant which was very busy and lunchtime . I had left her outside bakery and when I came out no basset - saw restaurant door next door open and went in and there she was heading to the kitchen. Got her out Door was closed from then on
- and one time I took Houdini in a cart/carrier into safeway but when I got to checkout a head starting coming out of the carrier which was hidden. Pushed her back and ran like .............. It all happened so quick it was like nothing happened but behind line were a little shocked. Imagine
if she'd gotten loose!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! She still hasn't been found so has found another slave!

Went back left her at vets.

Mona's one lucky pooch to have you as slaves.
Yes I had an Airedale with the bassets but I was working. Now I'm home and she's 15 plus and no reason to
bark cuz Houdini ran away when I moved.
The only thing before I had a cat Miss Becky wanted him to run so she could chase him- well Mr. Mow was having no part of that so wouldn't move and Becky would bark at him for hours. We finally separated in different rooms
them but not before one day I went home and Miss Becky had this horrific bloody face (still barking tho). Mr. Mow had had quite enough and swatted her a few but still didn't move and was still barking!
Then along came Houdini who must have set the rules as to top dog/cat cuz Miss B wouldn't go by her unless I was there. Houdini had the thing about when Miss Becky went by would put her paw gently on her and pet her? and Miss B would very loudly yelp.!!!!!!!!! Amazing
Another good news thing from Arkansas is that Richlyn just called (pieced together wires for now) and she has her 96 yearold mom with her during the crisis but the most amazing
thing is their new house has power which is downright amazing. Nobody else has power yet. Guess she's being paid back for looking after all those strays down there that pass (they sit outside gate for a day or so) by or are dumped and stay. She even looked after a glacouma one and fixed the eye but he died after a bout with pancreatitis. So she deserves it. She will be unhappy with me for reporting this. The strays she finds a home or they just plain stay. Nobody leaves on their own..

Gee Bob you helped R Rescue!!! you R always helpin rescues!)

Thank You Bob and Thank You to everybody who got some of BobTheDoG magnuts
for Valentines!

We have a youngster in named Hal who is costin us guys more than usual cause
he needs Ivermectin everyday and extra stuff above what a usual rescue dog
needs. He is not healthy enough to neuter him yet.

We have Vikki, Sandy, and Dr. Marta all workin on this sweetheart. He looks
so badd that nobody wants to pet him even at first because of his demodectic
mange.... but even though we have all these wonderful people donating time
and money he still needs MORE STUFF. So...Bob and furrends and all you good
healing drool we can go out and buy his Ivermectin and stuff that adds up money
wise to take care of him.

lol Like DUCT TAPE! He is going to be looking worse before he looks better
because all the little bugs will be dieing that are in his skin and so he
will be needing MORE DUCT TAPE! Just was thinkin that maybe somebody might like
to hear this HINT on Helping in Rescue??????

Use a tee shirt on them (he is about hairless now on his body) and no Velcro
or sewing or gluing is needed...just pull out a long strip of duct tape and
duct tape the SHIRT (not the dog!) nicely..just snug so that the shirt fits
exactly to just before the wienny/waist.
Ta Dah! Insta Protection. It makes them feel good to have a shirt on.

<<You will need to take him out several times a day and praise him like he just won the lottery.>>

I would recommend that you take a young puppy out VERY often. Every time it eats, plays a lot, or does anything else that could get the pipes started and a few more times for good measure. If you have to take the hound out every hour, just count that as the cost of housebreaking. The interruption will not last forever.

As to tying your hound to you, remember that bassets are very low to the ground, and even as pups they can be very powerful. Our Jane could have knocked me off my feet, so I never tried that, but I was very vigilant.

I don't remember the age of your dog, but if you hang some bells on your door, a slightly older dog can learn to ring them when the urge comes along. It took our Jane a day to figure that out (but we've had to listen to the bells forever after).

Every time your hound does things right, give a REALLY good treat--those dried meat treats would be my choice. When I was training our Jane, really good treats seemed to turn things around. Suddenly she got the idea and it has never faded. She's much better than our boys at not having accidents, and I always claim it's because I trained her. Good training pays off in the long run, though it may be difficult to establish. The only hitch with this plan is that you have to carry treats out with you every time. Don't leave them in your coat pockets and leave your coat where the dog can get it, or your hound will probably chew a hole in your pockets to get them (or maybe you are better at hanging up your coat than I am and have a closet that is not blocked by your outside door!)

But remember, bassets can be slow to get the picture. That doesn't necessarily mean you are a failure. Just continue to be patient. Don't yell at the offending hound, since that will just make things worse--the last thing you need is to have the dog get nervous in this situation. A firm "no" is all you really need, though you may feel like screaming. But losing your cool will just show the dog that you are out of control, and he'll be less likely to obey.

Persistence and consistency will win the day. Remember that you're dealing with a stubborn basset and be just as stubborn as it is. To keep your mind set on your job, remember that it's going to be easier to train a young dog than an older one. This is your golden opportunity--one that will last a dog's lifetime and will make both your lives much easier. So don't give up.

Hi All,

I just wanted to let everyone know that Deuce is up for Basset of the Week.
I don't even know where to start or end to tell you how much this boy means
to me. He is the light of my life, the reason I enjoy everyday, and the
keeper of my soul. He is a very demanding, energetic, positively a pain in
my butt 5 year old. In the picture, he is stretched out between 2 huge dog
beds. In fact his brother Rowdy was standing there try to figure out how to
step over him, so he could lay down and take a nap. Deuce has mastered
slave training down to a science, to the point that you don't even know he
has trained you. For example, I take them with me on the weekends to the
BF's house, and even there he has mastered the art of slave training. My
BF's son and his girlfriend was laying on the couch, and there comes Deuce,
who by the way isn't happy unless he is laying on the couch. Well he looks
at the corner of the couch, and back at BF's son, and then back at the
corner of the couch, and so forth. Well it took all of 30 seconds of his
hypnotizing eyes and the BF's son gets up and makes his girlfriend get up
and move over and then pats the couch and says, "come on get up here." I
just sat there in amazement and watch the whole thing play out. Deuce
happily jumps on the couch and goes to sleep, and the son and girlfriend try
and rearrange themselves to get comfortable again. I am hopelessly in love
with him, and when I think about him and his brother during the day, it's
always with a warm heart and smile. They truly have given me so much
unconditional love and ask for nothing in return. My life would not be so
happy and filled with so much love if I didn't have them, to share it with
me. Big kisses to you my nutty little fury man, may you always be as happy
as you make me.

Teresa
Rowdy ( I want to lay down too)
Deuce ( These beds are all mine)
Yukon ( atb forever in my heart)

Hey guys,

Allot of you helped me in my support of a local cause where a dog named Brindi was unfairly picked up by animal control.
The owner went to court and had the euthanization order squashed. Brindi is still not home
Why I am writing is because after careful consideration and everything I learned I am no longer in favor of this dog going back to her former owner. Not only did the owner state that after the dog is retrained she will let it off leash when the dog was and is under a muzzle order but she compared the SPCA to Germans death camp.
Now she later apologized but I felt it was really wrong. The SPCA are only housing the dog, they are not in control of what happens to it.
So it gets better I tell the owner I am scared for her health and she should not go on a hunger strike. I am banned immediately and the hate mail to me starts.
Rather silly but it did I am a big girl and hit delete

So it gets better. The RCMP have had calls the SPCA and its officers have had death threats by Brindi's owners and her many angels. This is what is
posted on the SPCA website
"News and Announcements

February 8, 2009: Please be advised that the Metro Shelter is not closed but has put security measures in place based on threats made to management. The Shelter Management Team has brought in security measures that will keep its staff, volunteers, and potential adopters safe. We still need support from the community in the form of people coming to the shelter to adopt."

The animals all suffer I am sure it will scare potential adoptive parents away
I joined another group that is for saving the dog and having it rehomed where it does not have to be put down. Hate mail again :0) tis ok I am a big girl
anyway I just wanted to drop you all a line so that If you are in that group you know the whole story, you can add me on facebook as

The group I fully support is here ( http://www.facebook.com/inbox/?ref=mb#/group.php?gid=48634654764 )

I've been following today's posts about housebreaking. All great advice ... thanks! I'm gonna try the bells at the door, for sure.
?
My situation: 6 month old basset (Moses). He knows exactly what to do when taken outside on a potty break. No problem there. He hasn't pooped in the house in months. So, good there as well. But ... he can't seem to latch on to the idea of not peeing in the house. Sometimes he does it right in front of us. Right after he's been outside. And he'll do it anywere ... it's not just in one spot (though he has his favorites). Some days he'll not have an accident ... some days he'll have three or four.
?
Is this normal? We keep telling ourselves it will fade as he gets older. Is this true? We sometimes even rationalize it to ourselves ... that cleaning up after him is totally worth the joy he brings us (which is true!). But, it would be nice to not go through a role of paper towls every two days.
?
Any thoughts?
?
Thanks,
Brooke, mommy to Moses
