I am fostering a dog named LLBean. He has been undergoing
heart worm treatment and has had a hard time with congestion and
breathing. From a behavioral standpoint, he was escaping a wire kennel
and tearing up his flews in the process. I have had him for 2 weeks, he
arrived as a very itchy dog. He has been on a different diet for the past
2 weeks. I have seen his body relax and lose its tension, the itching has
subsided and he is getting restful sleep. Before while kenneled he would
completely freak out, he is eating in a kennel now and when I transport him, he
is reluctant to get in, but lays calmly. We have started him on Reconcile
(Prozac) however the dose is lower than required for his body weight. Is
it possible he was being driven to unusual behavior because of the
itching? Could his kennel escaping really be trying to relieve the itchy
flews? I have no experience with food allergies in dogs. I know
humans can be pretty miserable. His behavior has changed
completely, he is putting on weight, playing with the other hounds and even
playing with toys. He has a healthy glow about him. He still goes
to the door and wants to come when I leave, after a couple of woofs, he is fine.
He will find paper when bored to shred and that is the worst I have seen.
The only identifiable differences are a change in food, being with other dogs
and taking Prozac. The itching subsided over 7 to 10 days, could this be
the culprit?
