<DIV>This is what my Spanky died from last August. It is an auto immune disease
where the body destroys red blood cells faster than they can be produced.
Treatment is blood transfusions, massive doses of pred to suppress the immune
system and antibiotics in case there is an underlying infection such as Lyme. It
can be caused by poisoning, yard chemicals, a tumor somewhere in the body and
rarely a reaction to a rabies vaccination. In most cases, the cause is unknown
and just happens. People get this also and it can be fatal. It does reoccur even
if the patient recovers from the initial bout.</DIV>
<DIV>In Spanky's case, he was doing well at the acute care vet for a couple of
days and I was getting encouraging reports on him. (I was on vacation in Oregon
at the time.) Then the reports were not so encouraging and finally the vet said
they would continue to treat him until I could get there but there was no hope
of recovery. Many miles and thousands in vet bills later, I said goodbye
to him.</DIV>
