<p class=MsoNormal>I read your post and responded via email, but wanted to pass
along my experience from this past Saturday with Petunia’s annual exam with
everyone just in case someone else could learn from my experience. Petunia
received four vaccinations at the same time: Rabies, DHLPP, Lymes, and Kennel
Cough. This is the first time that she received all four at the same time
and I thought with my crazy schedule that it was great that they could take
care of everything in one visit. I never had a problem with my previous
dog. Last year before I got her she already had the DHLPP and the Kennel
Cough shots and after I got her she had the Rabies and Lymes shots at separate times.
I made two trips to the vet that day. As soon as I got her home she began
vomiting. The vet had given me a pamphlet about what to expect after your
dog has been vaccinated. There were two lists on the pamphlet, one for
common side effects and one for serious side effects that you should call your
vet immediately. I called the vet to tell her she was vomiting because it
was on the serious side effects list and the vet told me to give her two
Benadryl immediately and bring her back immediately if her breathing seemed
labored or her face began to swell. I waited an hour after giving her the
Benadryl and saw no improvement so I called the vet again. Petunia was now
panting, scratching, shaking her head violently, and she had hives on her head,
in her ears and on her back legs. I had to rush her back to the vet for a
steroid injection. She is fine now, but because she received 4 shots in
the same day, they don’t know which one caused the reaction.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class=MsoNormal>My lessons learned from this experience were:<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class=MsoNormal>If you don’t know how your dog will react to the
injections, have them get one at a time because if they do have an allergic
reaction you will know which vaccine caused the reaction.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class=MsoNormal>Always keep Benadryl on hand in case of emergency.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class=MsoNormal>If you find out that your dog is allergic to one of the
vaccinations, ask your vet how to prevent it in the future. In my case, Petunia
must have two Benadryl an hour before getting any shots from now on and must
wait at the vet’s office for an hour after the injection before returning
home.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class=MsoNormal>Don’t leave your dog alone after any vaccines, they
should be supervised in case of a reaction.<o:p></o:p></p>
