<DIV>It is not a requirement in the breed standard that a basset have
a white tip on it's tail. It is preferred in the field as it's easier to
keep track of the dog when hunting. The tail is carried up so the white tip
is easily visible when they are trailing game or tracking through the tall grass
or heavy brush. In the show ring all hound colors and markings are
allowed and have no bearing on a hounds overall quality. </DIV>

<DIV>I've had several bassets with no white tip on their tails. Usually they are
primarily solid colored over their entire body. Jasmine is a blanket tricolor
with a muddy face and no white on her body or head and neck. She has a solid
brown tail all the way to the end. She has a white chest, feet and legs and
white on her tummy. She's a "plain jane" as far as coloring goes. She has very
nice conformation and movement. </DIV>

<DIV>I've seen more with white tips on their tails than without.
I prefer that they have a white tip on their tail. Most of my current
bassets have open markings and plenty of white on their tails. When they
are all out running around, I often know who is who from behind by the amount of
white on that tail.</DIV>
