<div>I am now suggesting that when a basset or bassets are going to be placed into a home that already has a dog that the following steps be considered and taken as possible.</div>

<div>1. That both dogs meet independently of their home in a neutral area, such as a park or open area, where they are allowed to greet on loosh leashes and to walk together on a short walk allowing time to interact. If all goes well, off leash may be ok, but be prepared and constantly observe the interactions and separate if anyone becomes tense or concerned.</div>

<div>2. That both/all dogs are taken to a training professional with experience in dog-dog relationships who can assess the potential relationship and make recommendations. (Note: Many will do this for no or lowered cost when working with a rescue group. Responsible breeders can use this opportunity to introduce new puppy people to a trainer for their new dog.)</div>

<div>3. That then the new dog/s be taken for an overnight or weekend into the prospective home with no commitment for adoption until they see how well the dogs do together in the new environment. Plans should be made in advance for sleeping arrangements, eating arrangements and placement/enrichment during human time away. Situation should be as close to normal family life as possible. Review the outcome should then be done by all parties to discuss what went well and what needs to be addressed for further success or change of placement.</div>

<div>4. Follow-up checks at 90 days, six months and one year.</div>

<div>I understand that there are circumstances that do not always allow for this thorough of a vetting, but I believe if these steps are followed then the placement will be much more assured of longterm success for the emotional and mental wellbeing of all involved.</div>
