dogs and cats coming out of anesthesia, and boy it can be really upsetting to
the humans. I found that it’s really good to get some water down
them, even it all you do is keep dipping your finger in water and rubbing it on
their mouth, lips, teeth, whatever. A little water seems to help them
start to snap out of it. But like <st1:City w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Beverly</st1:place></st1:City>
says, it just takes time, and some don’t shake it as well or as fast as
others. <o:p></o:p></span></font></p>

Chances are really good that it wasn't so much pain Gus was feeling
but the after-effects of the anesthesia.(Which is not to say he was not also in
pain) We didn't like to send dogs home until they were not only awake but
had urinated on their own-- that is, on a walk-- and able to function. Most
dogs thrash and cry and scream coming up from anesthesia. The last time
Cooper had anesthesia he had a really rough time, and the common drugs to calm
dogs are not drugs you can give a Belgian.<o:p></o:p></span></font></p>

font-family:Verdana'>Usually Doc makes me go home but this time I decided to
stay and the situation was so distressing to Cooper that I finally brought him
home and literally held him down on a bed until he woke up a bit. He APPEARED
awake before that but wasn't, really. It was a bad and ugly event. <o:p></o:p></span></font></p>

font-family:Verdana'>I KNOW BETTER than to hang around while one of my dogs is
waking up, especially Cooper who historically has a hard time throwing off the
effects. Get your dog up and outside to pee. The sooner they pee
the sooner they start getting rid of the drugs.<o:p></o:p></span></font></p>

font-family:Verdana'>We had little dogs-- Chihuahuas and Papillions and like
that-- who had to be swathed like a baby in a blanket and carried around until
the drugs wore off, or they would scream for hours. We finally concluded that
little round-headed dogs process anesthesia differently-- and not as well. We
had no scientific evidence just what we dealt with and an educated guess. So
please don't write and say I'm wrong, I well could be.<o:p></o:p></span></font></p>
