Seasons last, alas, 21 days. She will go from bleeding quite a bit to almost not. Her vulva will be very swollen and soft--the closer she is to breeding the softer it will be. Her desire to breed will be overwhelming when it happens, about mid-way through the cycle. If you scratch the base of her tail and she moves it to the side, this is called "Flagging" and it means she is in "standing heat"-- in otherwords, she will let any male in universe breed her.

A female in standing heat is a total slut. I have seen them back up to chain link fences trying to get to a dog in a run next to her. An experienced male can nail her in a heartbeat-- you may think they don't have time but trust me, they do.

Therefore you must never, ever ever let her out without an adult along. Walkies are over for the next 3 weeks, because you will attract any loose male within a mile. Or more. They will fight. If a male tries to breed her before she is ready SHE will fight.

Buy a pair of panties for bitches. They sell them at PetSmart. Buy some light-day pads to put in them. It not only keeps things cleaner (altho some bitches are very very clean) but it help protect them against accidental breedings.

DO NOT let her out alone.

DO NOT take her to walks, waddles, obedience classes.

DO NOT take her to the dog park.

Even neutered males may hit on her.

Also do not think because the male is her brother, son or Father they won't breed. They will.

Do not leave the panties on her unsupervised-- you don't want her chewing them up and eating the pad.

An alternative is to board her. The smell of a bitch is season will make males crazy. They stop eating, they will spend all their time trying to get to her. Supposedly you can coat the boys noses with Vicks but it never ever once worked for us.

Once her heat is over bathe her very very very thoroughly with the best dog shampoo you can buy and concentrate on her privates. She will be attractive to males for awhile but she won't let them near her, so you have no need to worry but can expect some angry bitch snarking at the boys.

It's a lot of fun. They come into season twice a year.

It is three weeks of living hell for everyone in the house if you have males, too.
