— In a heartening end to a tragic story, a dog that had been missing after
escaping from a vehicle in a fatal crash on Interstate 80 Sunday was found
Thursday on a city street, Paterson’s chief animal control officer
reported.

A resident reported a stray dog on Caldwell Avenue near McBride
Avenue early Thursday afternoon, and a nearby city public works employee called
animal control, said John DeCando, the animal control official.

Animal
control came and identified Bodhi, the 2-year-old basset hound mix belonging to
victim John C. Everhart, 20, of Bethesda, Md., who died Sunday in the highway
accident.

“The tags are on, everything,” De Cando said. “He seems
to be in good health. This is unbelievable. This is a miracle,
really.”

The victim’s father, Jay Everhart, said the family was back in
Maryland for a memorial service and that a friend of John’s would pick up the
dog and bring him to Bethesda.

“We’re very excited,” Everhart said. “We
were in New Jersey yesterday and everybody said, ‘Don’t worry, that dog will be
found because people here really care about animals.' And they’re
right.”
