This past Sunday, I took Duke and Duchess over for the day.

Debi enjoys bathing the hounds, so she always will do that when they come over. After D&D got their baths, they were hauling basset butt around the back yard, and as Duke was coming up onto the patio area, where the pool is, it was apparent he realized he ran out of ground….just a little too late! Amy said it was slow motion, he assumed the position, the position being all 4 legs out, and did a perfect belly flop into the pool. Now, we are in FLA, but it is still chilly here and the water in the pool is more than chilly for us! Duke did show that he is a swimmer, and swam around the edge of the pool before he came over to the steps where Debi was waiting for him. During this time, Duchess is along the sideline barking her head off at Duke. I have no doubt she was calling him an old fool, and threatening to tell the rest of the Bounders how he fell into the pool. Now these 2 hounds have been a pair for at least 8-9 yrs., so I guess a little “I told you so” from Duchess was not a surprise. Whether Duke jumped because he wanted to, or because he had no other choice, who knows, but he did get lots of extra loving and cuddling the rest of the afternoon. I say he was not an old fool, just a very smart senior hound, figuring out how to get pampered to his heart’s desire!

Duke and Duchess are available for adoption through Suncoast Basset Rescue.
