<DIV>We had Abner on the green bean diet and even now occasionally add beans to his diet, when he starts knoshing on grass.</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV>There are a couple of keys to making this diet work: Don't feed too much kibble, and don't feed to many treats/people food. Get everyone in your household on board with this. The diet will not work if you are pushing in the pounds from other sources. We feed Abner about three quarters of a cup, twice a day. I felt awful about giving him so little, but it's the right amount for him. He's short. He doesn't need as much food as the other hounds. But however much you feed your hound, make sure it allows said hound to lose slowly (like I seriously believe that's a problem, but if you went too low in amount, it might be--a nice, gentle loss of a few pounds a month will be good, ask your vet for a more accurate figure, if you want).</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV>Another thing is to make certain you are not feeding a food that's full of fat. Go to the pet store. Read the food bags. See how much fat each brand has, and if yours is high, try a lower fat one. Fat content can vary quite a bit, and high fat will keep your hound fat. For a long time we had Abs on a senior diet, but recently we switched to one that's not senior, and it's working just fine. If the ingredients are the right ones and the fat is not high, it may work--but we made that switch years after Abs hit his goal weight. </DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV>Did Abner like the diet? No. Don't expect your hound to either. But hold fast to the rules, because in the long run it will be good for your dog. Abner lost a lot of weight when he was in the vet's for back surgery. It is not a nice way to lose weight. Better that you have your hound lose it slowly, without the added pain of a hurting back. And even after the surgery, Abs had some distance to go. He got there with the green beans.</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV>I fed Abs frozen green beans, since I didn't want a high salt content. Defrost them a bit before you add them to the food. If you do so in the microwave, run some cold water over them so they are not too hot for the hound. Drain thoroughly and plop it atop the food.</DIV>

<DIV>You may not have a svelte basset immediately, but it should work over time. Happy slimming.</DIV>
