Knock on wood Basil has not had any hot spots, but Waldo had a few. As recommended by someone on the Drool (and seconded by our vet) I cleaned the spots several times a day with the blue power solution - it's not just for ears! It really did help, although if you have a hound with lots of white fur you do need to be careful, because the gentian violet stains.

You may start shaving and discover the spot is considerably larger and nastier than you thought. If the hair is really sticky and matted down, blot it with warm water until it loosens, then shave it off. Be careful of clipper burn. There's no point in making something nasty worse.

Rinsing them clean with warm water and betadine and then letting it dry is helpful, because Betadine is a drying, anti-fungal agent. MOst dogs need an antibiotic and a good hit of Pred to stop the itching. Mine always end up at the Vet's, even tho I have clippers and the whole shebang.
