Helena,
Sounds like you got Gabapentin aka neurontin. It is used for nerve based pain (neuropathic pain). In 2 leggers the dosage is highly variable (i've seen people on over 2000 mg a day for shingles pain and i have read that up to 3600mg is used) but be careful what form you are using for the dog because some formulations
(especially liquid forms) for human use may contain the sweetener Xylitol which is toxic to dogs, so care must be taken if the human version is used for veterinary purposes (cite to wikipedia and http://www.rxlist.com/neurontin-drug.htm). Let us know how it is working (finger crossed that it is). It is terribly distressing to be dealing with the hounds when they can't tell u what hurts. :-( We had a scare with Elvis just a week or so ago.

Older dogs can get ODD (old dog disease) which is a vestibular disorder (i had a cat get this, oddly) (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vestibular_disease) that can cause some symptoms like you described. Did you get a diagnosis of a mass or tumor by palpation or diagnostic image, or is he making an educated guess? I will keep my fingers crossed that it is something less than a tumor.

You, of course, have our thoughts and prayer and my two are 'slingin drool' as they say.

Jeff Deane
