His trigger is also sleeping. If he is sleeping and you wake him up suddenly he will growl and snap. Same solution: he sleeps in a crate. If he is not awake when we need to leave for work in the morning, we open the door and throw a few peanuts in the crate. Once he is awake and out of the crate he is fine. He is also food possessive, so we feed him in a crate and make sure that all uneaten food from the other dogs is picked up and put away before letting him out. Avoiding his triggers has solved the problem.
