I'm really interested in fellow Droolers' response to Susan's predicament with Gus.

We have a similar situation with Alfie. I figured it was a dominance thing. I won't allow him on my lap anymore as he didn't like being hauled off (like, when I began to loose circulation in my legs!).

He's never been allowed on our bed.

I don't tend to fuss with him whilst he's on his bed either. It's hard because he's such as smoochy, 'love-on-me' hound generally and hugely bonded to me. But there's something there. He's has a mild form of Wobblers Syndrome so maybe he feels vulnerable because of that. We got him as a puppy from a reputable breader - someone who had a published a book on Bassets and had won at Crufts so we know his history. He's no back-yard abused, dumped basset.

I have a lady coming in to meet us all and give me some advice on the 28th February. I have a toddler now and while we are managing to keep hounds and baby apart for now - not ever having Bassets or a baby before - I'm not sure what lies ahead. I'm hoping that fixing and how I lead the pack will fix Alfie and our situation. I can't expect a toddler or young child to understand Alfie's triggers and how to avoid them.

I will let you know, Susan what my behaviorialist says. It is heartbreaking. I am a little fearful of my boy too, and it isn't nice. We live in a relatively built up area now and I feel stressed taking him for walks as I dread meeting children or other dogs. I took Millie - my dream Basset - for a walk on her own on Sunday and it was a completely different - pleasant - experience. She loved to be petted and people came and talked to us and she tripped along so happily. I can't do that with both of them.

Good luck to Susan finding a solution - and if you find an approach that works, do share (as I will)!

Happy Valentine's Day everyone.

Hilary, Alfie and Mille
