I contacted the volunteers that I have worked in the past with at BHRSC regarding the question posed of how the dog got out.

I was told that "The family said he was either let out of the yard or escaped. They have a lock on the yard now."

The most recent update to volunteers stated, in part:

Typically, BHRSC, does not have a budget for a reward of this amount. However, BHRSC, feels strongly about the urgent need to find and press charges against the individual responsible for this
horrific action. This person has committed a grotesque act against an animal, next time it could be a human life taken. “It is our responsibility to do everything in our power to help bring Buddy’s murderer
to justice and ensure this does not happen again to another helpless animal or member of society,” Chiaramonte said. BHRSC supporters have contributed more than $3,500 overnight to add to the
reward. The total reward currently stands at $5,500.

--

They are now asking that people in the Ventura County area just get the word out about this terrible act, so that the perpetrator(s) can be apprehended. They requested that people, and especially locals to the area, hang, email and/or fax their flyer around town, at vet offices and on social networking sites. The more people who see it and talk, the more likely we are to find the person we are looking for. If you'd like a copy of the flyer and/or press release, email me off list. I don't want to clog up the drool with attachments.

Still so very sad about this horrific act, but am glad to see basset and dog lovers alike coming together to help catch the person who did this.

Drool to all,
Kacy w/Cowboy and Rupert
