After talking to the Vet Saturday, I decided that we would take everything<br>
one day at a time and just see how Gracie did. Friday, Saturday and Sunday<br>
we managed to get her to eat deli sliced turkey and also about a half a can<br>
(the little flat ones) of cat food each day, and then she went on a walk<br>
with me and Holly Friday and Saturday. Gracie hasn't been able to walk for<br>
quite a few months, so what we do is, Holly and I walk, and Gracie gets<br>
pulled in the little red wagon. She has been feeling really bad recently,<br>
but you could tell she enjoyed the walks. Then Sunday she rallied quite a<br>
bit, I had been working on the yard all afternoon and stopped, grabbed my<br>
car keys, and headed for the door to go get a half-price Coke at Sonic.<br>
Holly wanted to go, but Gracie actually got up and headed for the door, too.<br>
So I said okay girls, let's go. Of course I had to carry Gracie most of the<br>
way to the car, but for her to even stand up and start for the door was<br>
amazing.<br>

When we got back, she laid out in the driveway for a while (she loved doing<br>
that, it gave her the opportunity to enjoy the sun and also ignore me when I<br>
called her to come in. Great fun.) Once we finally got back into the<br>
house, she crashed and put herself to bed. Next morning (Monday), she was<br>
done. Could barely manage to get her feet under her, could barely stand,<br>
and could walk maybe a foot or two before sinking to the floor. It was<br>
really pitiful. So we called the Vet and yesterday afternoon late Holly and<br>
I took her in. It was over very quickly and easily, her poor 15 year old<br>
body was just totally worn out.<br>

When I put Sister Anna down, I did not take Gracie and Holly, and they did<br>
not understand what happened to Anna, they looked for her for months,<br>
especially Holly. And Holly really did not do well for a long time. That's<br>
why I took Holly along, hoping that she would not spend time worrying about<br>
where Gracie was because she realized Gracie died. I think it worked, Holly<br>
is not looking for Gracie and worrying. She is being pretty needy, but<br>
that's okay. I think we'll be looking for one or two more old seniors<br>
pretty quickly, it's awfully quiet around here and I think Holly needs the<br>
company. Gracie and Anna were Holly's protectors, they made her feel safe.<br>
So if any of the rescues that are close to Texas (we're in Dallas) have any<br>
sweet, mellow old senior gals or guys who are good with cats and need a<br>
quiet home, please contact Sister Holly, she is interviewing for new<br>
friends.<br>

When you are putting a hound on a drug for a behavioral issue, it's important to get the right one. When Abner got aggressive, we tried one drug, it may have been Xanax, which did nothing for him. Prozac quelled the aggression quite a bit, but it did not stop it all. You have to use behavioral methods along with the drug. Finally we discovered that Abs was in pain, which caused the aggression. Once we started the glucosamine and chondroitin that eased his back pain, he was fine.<br>
<br>
Coming up with a solution to behavioral problems is a multipronged matter. I usually tell people that as the ones living with the dog, they have insights no vet can have. Watching what triggers the problems is a key part of dealing with the issue. When it seems that no triggers exist, you may actually be missing the key one, so you have to watch the dog for a while. It's not easy to come up with a solution. And of course, when it's a health issue, as it was with our Abs, you have to hit on the source of the pain. We actually came on the solution for Abs by talking to a surgeon who was looking at his cancer, not his back. I was so thankful I mentioned the back trouble to that vet, even though that was not specifically what we were there for.<br>
<br>
Abs used to bite at my feet when I tried to walk past in him in narrow spaces. So I learned how to manage that. Throwing treats to him did not solve the problem, but I got bitten a lot less. I also learned not to look him in the eye, which he saw as a threat. These things helped me live with him, but only finding the real problem, his back pain, solved it.<br>
<br>
Finding out what causes a dog to be aggressive can be a long road. Medication can help, but it's not the only part of the solution. Still, if it helps keep people safe, I am all for it, under a doctor's direction.<br>

Leonard has had it~~he was very sick the first time~~yes I said the first<br>
time the vet told me dogs either get this once or get it recurring..<br>
<br>
they treated him with ivs and medicine at the hospital and sent home with<br>
flagyl and we have a prescription of flagyl to give him immediately at<br>
signs of a flare..he has gotten it two more ties but the quick medicine has<br>
made it just a nuisance so far..we also changed the food and he hasnt been<br>
sick since..we went all grain<br>

I laughed at Dale's post about not having room for another dog bed in the bedroom. In my bedroom, what floorspace that is not covered by dog beds is covered by wee wee pads.<br>

So here is the survey question. How many of us cannot get up in the middle of the night without stepping on at least one dog bed? I guess we can take it one step further and ask how many cannot get up without stepping on a dog?<br>
?<br>
Also, what is the current count of dog beds in the bedroom? I have five, if you count the pile of blankets occasionally used by the dogs, usually used by the cats. All those beds and yet Buddy the black Lab sleeps on the floor half the night, I think he gets hot. I usually have four or five hounds on the human bed with me. Sheesh.<br>

> Last Wednesday I let Veronica go to The Bridge. She had been declining in the past 2 months. Her kidneys were hanging in there but getting her to eat was increasingly difficult. her vision had drastically declined, she could not see where I was in the room unless right in front of her and she was now running in to things. On Tuesday it was clear that she didn't feel well, very uncomfortable, would lie down for a bit and then sit up and shift from front leg to leg. I let her out Wed. morning, let her back in, ran up to shower, and found her sitting upright in the exact place she was 10 to 15 minutes earlier. It struck me that she just wan't happy anymore and that everything I needed to do to her, was not something that she understood or tolerated. Nebulizer, she'd sit still for a bit then try to push the mask off, set it up to steam in the crate, she'd bang and cry to get out, pills, spit them out or hack them up, fluids under the skin, she'd get up and try to get away when<br>

> Two weeks ago the vet gave me a high calorie "Highly Palatable" nutrient gel to give her. I told him she wouldn't eat it. He told me it'd be easy- put it on the roof of her mouth and then rub her throat. I didn't want to laugh in his face, after all, he's trying to be helpful. Put gel on roof of mouth, Veronica refuses to swallow, waits until you let go of snooter, uses tongue to scrape gel off roof of mouth, hacks it on to floor, gives me a withering glare and stomps off while I wipe up brown slime. When we got to the vet Wednesday we found that she had pneumonia, when she came back in to the examining room, Veronica, who was ordinarily pulling for the door, just lay down on the floor. So I lay down next to her and told her that Rosemary would be waiting for her, and to please make an effort to look happy to see her, as Rose would be thrilled and would show her around, and no, she would not have to wear a hat. So my tough-cookie girl, who would give men in sunglasses and<br>

And as I probably wrote when Rosemary died, they had better be there when I get there. All of you with sick dogs, and those who've suffered a loss, as always are in my thoughts and prayers.<br>

Okay - I don't post often lately, but could some of our hounds send off a<br>
little drool for Leia Round? She goes in to the vet's tomorrow to have a<br>
small lump removed. It's not something that looks like a problem, mostly<br>
looks like the fatty lumps Maggie has, but this one is in an awkward<br>
location. It's right behind her collar, so anytime I put a leash on her, it<br>
pulls the collar into the lump. We don't want to aggravate it, so it's<br>
coming off. And, of course, while she's under, the teeth get a little<br>
touch-up as well.<br>
<br>
We expect this to be totally uneventful, but as always I worry.<br>

It was by mistake I swear. Anybody could have gotten confused. Mommy hasn't been feeling well Natalie baked last night because that makes the house smell nice and always makes mommy feel better. Natalie make sugar cookie dough and added red food coloring. She said they were basset cookies. Now how was I to know she meant they were SHAPED like basset cookies. When she said they were basset cookies I thought they were for us and got them down and shared them with Snoopy and LuLu after Natalie went to school this morning<br>

Once again, Ben and I find ourselves behind the drool ball. I just<br>
finished catching up on them. It has been so hard reading them lately with all<br>
that has been going on, all the ailing hounds, all those going to the<br>
bridge, and the humans leaving. Ben has been grabbing a few things from the<br>
table, so he will be able to make the drool needed for all. Lots of it is<br>
going to Penny and Bubba who ingested medications and are not in the Vetspital.<br>
We hope that they both pull through, so their slave will not have to<br>
worry about them in addition to his own special needs. The drool is also going<br>
out to Anita and her Gracie. Hopefully Gracie will not have to leave<br>
quite yet for the bridge.<br>
<br>
Drool is on the way to Marlene, whose Maggie now has Cushing's in addition<br>
to all her allergies. Hopefully the drool will help poor Maggie cope, and<br>
the vets will be able to help her. It is also going out to OBR's foster<br>
Kuder with the drinking problem, the problem that is in poor Kuder's head.<br>
Hopefully he will be able to get over it, and get over it. Lastly it goes<br>
to Wendie and her Edward. Glad the surgery went well and he is recovering.<br>
Hopefully there will be no other problems with the liver or that the<br>
stones are not anything but plain dark stones.<br>

I will be sending prayers along with Ben's drool that things go well for<br>
all, and for any I may have missed.<br>

Momma here, first major drool to all in need, wow, this has been a ruff week out there-----we are hoping the tables will turn and things will slow down to a dull roar for everyone.<br>
I own a hoarder. Yup-Sister Bessie-the younger-is a hoarder. It is cold here, well cold for us-and I have made sure there are plenty of blankets in the hounds crates. Bessie so enjoys her blankets---yesterday I went to fluff them for her, and what do my wondering eyes find??? A whole weeks hoarding of her fish oil caps. Yes those are the big ones and it was very apparent she feels she does not need them. She had piled them together and covered them under one of her blankets. She showed no remorse mind you-----<br>
Time to outsmart this basset girl.<br>
I will probably fail.<br>
