A feeling they can't endure for long and so they convince themselves that the outcome is unwinnable anyway and rather than go through the long drawn out process it is faster and least painful to simply force a failure and deal with the outcome. Some folks see

It's like the kid who breaks up first because he can't stand to have his girl break up with him. Over and over. While we like to think they're very clever and perhaps they are .... yeah
