We have always had a doggie door ..... it is huge, meant for labs, but right at floor level (we've always fostered and pups need it low). Snoopy could use it immediately when he moved in. But we noticed it was hard on him going OUT (down). There was a pretty significant step (you know, that first one is a doosey) so ..... we constructed a ramp over the steps (there were 3 coming down from the dog door) and our bassets love it.
