I'm pretty rubbish at dates. I struggle to remember them, even my kids' birthdays, but I think it would have been in early 2008.?
I went to a local pound to adopt a blue greyhound and came home with Rolph. When I agreed to adopt him, the owner of the shelter fixed me with a glare and said "I think you're mad. Bassets are horrible dogs." Her co-head said "Get on the internet and read up everything you can about the breed." But a volunteer ran up and threw her arms around me thanking me for taking him.
And so began my adventures with bassets. I didn't get on the internet that week. I was arrogant enough to believe a lifetime of dog ownership, including rescue Afghans, qualified me for anything a canine could throw at me. Two weeks later, in desperation, I found the Daily Drool.
Through the Drool, I learned how to rethink everything I knew about dogs. I met friends I? have met in person, such as Rebecca Stanton and Dale Rutz and many more I will probably never meet, but feel I know well.
I also met other basset owners here in the UK, firstly through a club and more recently through Facebook groups. I have been involved in basset rescue as a fundraiser, homechecker, foster mum and most recently as a surprised midwife when the bitch I was fostering gave birth to eight puppies. I have also met some of my closest friends through bassets.
None of this would have happened if it was not for my reaching out to the Daily Drool in desperation when I adopted the wild child who would go on to be my heart dog and change my life.
Sally, with Hettie UK, always remembering PW Rolph? and Clara ATB.
OK, my turn. I adopted my first basset in 199; well, bought, really, out of
a newspaper. We didn't know better then. Her name was Annabelle Lee, and
she was SUCH a terror as a pup that I used to beg my husband to find her a
new home. Back then, of course, we thought "Crates were cruuuellll"; in
hindsight, she was being a normal, badly-supervised, bored, under-exercised
puppy.

When she was 18 months, she woke up blind in one eye with glaucoma. Thise
set off rounds of eye vet visits, laser procedures, lots and lots of
eyedrops, glaucoma in the other eye, and finally, removal of both eyes.
Our eyevet, dawG bless her, suggested the yahhoo group for owners of
blinddogs. There we met Jeanne M., another long-time Drooler, adn she
introduced us to the Drool.

Meanwhile, during the process of nursing Annabelle through all this, she
and I finally bonded, and bassets have been My Breed ever since. When I
introduced us here, she was immediately named a Pwincess by Dawn of the
East. In finding the Drool, I also found Basset Rescue of Georgia, where
we lived at the time. That was in 2001.

Between then and now, I've served on the boards of basset rescues in three
states (GA, AR, TX), fostered over 100 bassets, including several moms and
litters, and owned and lost Pw. Annabelle, Hector the Very Loud, Barney,
Bozlee, Bonnie, Pippa and Millie. Oh, I am also happily divorced. I
currently have Joker, who has his Therapy Dog Regular title from the AKC,
and Harley, my darling girl. They are both pet placements from reputable
breeders, and I am forever honored by the rescues and breeders who've
allowed me to be a home for their dogs.

I love and fondly remember Dale, Bev, and all our other storytellers. Pw.
Harley Chick, Annie the Turkey Basset, the OEBE, The Basset Fleet, and Pw.
and PITs. I read EVERY Drool Digest, but I always feel like I don't have
much to say anymore. FB has definitely been a factor in that. I'll try to
post some Joker and Harley stories more often.
Well we received the probiotic/digestive enzyme powder that I mentioned
last week for Buford. It contains a whole bunch of healthy things and got
good reviews for a variety of reasons. My hope was/is that the Yucca helps
to improve his skin condition. That is still to be decided as today is only
the 3rd day that he will receive it. But, wow, he sure does seem spunky. On
Tuesday he got a 1/2 scoop on his breakfast and dinner and was running
around like a 7 year old, going outside to bay and romp numerous times
throughout the day and night. Yesterday he got it on breakfast only because
he was up so many times the night before that we wondered if maybe it was
helping a little too much with his spunk level at night. So for now we will
continue to give on breakfast only and will evaluate and report back.
However, if anyone else is interested in putting a little spunk into
their old houndy's step, here's the Chewy link, so far it seems worth a
shot but again our study is still in the early stages.

It's a bit pricey but if you add it to your subscription, you get 50% off
your first order.
i joined the drool in 2004 when i adopted mr. cooper the bassetter (english setter/basset mix).? coop was rescued by an english setter rescue.? just picture a slightly longer and much squattier setter.? ?he opened my eyes to all things basset.? we waddled with tri state, did the trout parades with mid atlantic,, picnics, parties, you name it.? mr cooper was even basset of the week once. at the time i still had miss casey the chessie altho she was getting older.
2007 the phone rings and it's one of those "can you just foster for a short time?? it's an emergency!"? no i had been fostering both setters and bassets, n ever an issue (well there was that one setter, but that's another story for another time) off i drive to meet suzanne fitch and "flash" aka buster brown.? fell for him immediately.? only dog i ever failed with.? he was weirdly agile and smart.? tomatoes were his downfall.? as in he would tackle you to get some, eat out of a crockpot, etc.? he loved obedience and dressing up in costumes.? most of all tho, buster loved to sing.? he raised tons of moola with his ability to play along on the "i bet i can get my dog to sing for $1"? routine.? he had a whole list of questions and replie4s he would run thru.? buster had a weird following at events..
down the road came sally.? a mix (treeing walker/basset).? very very long and very very intellectually challenged.? vet said she needed a helmet to keep herself safe.? never really learned her name.? or if she liked food.? best was i don't think she recognized me when i would try to pick her up at day care.? "stranger danger"? still after 7 years.? really.
lowla arrived one february as a badly treated dump by her owners.? i calmed her and let her who the world was in deed an ok place.? lowla would follow me around at the dog park .? people would tell me that dog is going no where she had found her home.? she had her quuirks .? adopted on ce and came back.? lived her life having bubble baths, vacations, pickles and pineapples with me.? she developed seizures and then went blind from some sort of brain issue.? she told a pet psychic once that she was the good one and the other two were heathens.? just about sums it up.
i lived in jersey with the group.? moved them all up to nh with me.? now all 3 have passed, and are sorely miossed.? they are replaced with dexter.? my first non-rescue dog.? he is both? a therapy dog and service dog.? such a sweet gentle soul.? he responds with the state crisis response team.? i love this dog, he has done everything that i have asked of him.
so it's been about 12 years with the drool.? 5 dogs later and still going strong.? living in the great north woods - 60 miles from canada and loving? it .

I think I joined the drool around 2015 or maybe even earlier. I have
loved basset hounds since I was a child. I seemed to be drawn to the
long ears and short legs. I even found an old drawing I made of a dog as
a little girl and it was of a basset. I had a bagel growing up. Then I?
cleaned the kennels of a colony of bassets at Michigan State University
that were part of research into von Willebrand's disease - a bleeding
disorder. I just loved visiting with them. (Ironically my husband had a
similar bleeding disorder and grew up with a poster of a basset on his
bedroom wall.)

My first basset, Max, was a wedding gift from my bridesmaids. As a puppy
he had decided not to use his back legs. We had a few vets check him and
they all agreed it was not a problem and he would eventually use his
back legs, which he did. He had such separation anxiety until we got him
a companion non-a-basset dog (and then another). After Max passed away
my husband was offered a job in MN. I told him I would move if I could
get another basset. We moved and I got Tucker - my little sweetheart who
slept curled up against my stomach under the sheets every night.

After Max came Lilly and Jem, who are both with us now and are a joy.
Through all of them, the drool has been a fount of info and fun. I love
the stories shared by everyone and even though I look at the FB pages, I
still love the drool the most and tell anyone with a basset to check it out.

Thanks for all the great years and stories.
I joined the mailing list over 20 years ago - maybe 25 or so. It started with my Roscoe P Hunter. I loved following along with the doggies, and cried when they left us. So many of their humans have left us now as well. I learned so much from this group.
2001. Wow, can it be 21 years? I tripped on the group when i was looking
for advice on my new puppy. Harry was my first dog. To be thrust into dog
ownership with a Basset Hound was quite the adventure. Lol. We only had 10
short years with our beautiful boy. I still think about him every day. It
also brought us our Kroozer whom we were privileged to love for 10 months.
This group was a lifeline for so many reasons. Still is in some ways. I
will always cherish the advice, the friendships, the laughter and the
comraderie. I may only really be a lurker now, but still and always will be
a Drooler at heart.
