You are correct.  The heartworm preventative will only kill the eggs and baby parasites.  They dog will need heartworm treatment to rid the body of the worms.  Our Opie is getting to the end of his treatment right now.  He had to get a shot and then stay quiet (mostly in a crate) for four weeks and then he went to the vetspital for two days to get two more shots that had to be 24 hours apart.  He  then came home and has to stay quiet for four more weeks. He will then go back and get rex-rayed to see if his lungs and heart are clear.  The injections will kill the worms and they have to stay still so the worms do not cause clots in the heart or lungs before they are absorbed into the body.  Opie has congested lungs and is on predisone to clear them up.  It is not a fun experience.  Opie has to stay medicated to stay calm.  He cannot wait to run in the yard with Layla and cannot understand why she can go out in the yard and he can't.  He LOVES his yard.  Two more weeks and
 hopefully he will run, run, run!
