[Dailydrool] Rock eating dog

Tomorrow I'm going to pick up a dog who has a rock-eating problem. He just had surgery on 4/18 for rock removal, and the owner thought he had done it again because he was acting sick. It turned out that he has an infection: no rocks.

I guess he learned this behavior from watching the dachshund play with rocks. The dachshund does not eat the rocks, however.

I know people have written about their dogs swallowing rocks and other stuff. Does anyone have any success stories about dogs growing out of this behavior, or being trained not to eat rocks, or using any behavior modification techniques to stop the rock eating?

OR does a rock eater need to be supervised at all times and/or muzzled?
