[Dailydrool] Feeding

Hi droolers, we are getting into a awful pickle over feeding and I'd be really grateful for your advice.

Alfie and Millie have become very fussy about their food. We've pandered to them (and I confess in my case, spoon feed them high grade wet food on my hands and knees) and they're now walking all over us.

They have always been super-paranoid about the contents of each other bowls and it has been a nightmare trying to ensure that Millie gets her puppy variety, and Alfie, his adult variety. We tried feeding seperately at first, but the only way, we'd get them to eat anything was to feed them together and let them sample from each others' bowls. Of course, this has meant that neither got all their special formulations but at least they got some. Millie is 9 months old, Alfie a year and a-half. This wasn't ideal but at least they were eating.

Then Alfie got a infection between his toes and the only thing we could get him to eat was chicken (and his pills wrapped around slices of processed cheese!). Of course we couldn't just feed on of them fresh chicken. Now I can't get them back on their previous brand of wet food. We've gone back to separating them, to ensure that Millie gets her puppy food but she can smell the difference, and so can he and they not having it!

They are separated by a baby gate and can see one other. They will eat if I spoon or fork feed them, but I'm doing that every meal time. They sniff at it as if it is going to poison them: and its 70% meat, top quality with all the bells on. Kids in UK schools eat cheaper meals.

Am I right to persist in feeding separately? Maybe we should try doing it in rooms where they can't see one another. They get quite distressed if separated completely so I don't think that is going to work.

My partner thinks we should switch to dry food. I don't know how much wet food is in the States but I'm throwing away punnets of wet foods costing $1.5 each (82p) on a daily basis (they are supposed to have three a day). The dry stuff just doesn't look very appealing.

Anyone else conquered fussy hounds?

Hilary, Alfie and Millie
